Deep Slacker Jazz from New York

Gone Savage: I Got the Screenwriter's BluesGone Savage: I Got the Screenwriter's Blues
Unless you're a New Yorker, you could probably be forgiven for having never heard of Soul Coughing. They were never really that big, especially here in Australia. I discovered them sometime in the mid-to-late nineties, doing this weird-arse tune called Unmarked Helicopters on the first X-Files soundtrack. They described their music as 'Deep Slacker Jazz', a term which doesn't really mean anything to me. I would describe them as a band that plays good music. And by 'good music', I mean acoustically-driven, electronic, hip-hop-ish jazz fused with funk, rock, blues and everything in-between (and outside of...). The lyrics are deep, poetic, repetitive and usually spoken-word.

Lead singer, Mike Doughty, was a doorman at the original Knitting Factory, an NY venue of mythical proportions. Soul Coughing played most of their early shows there. They released seriously three fine albums and contributed to several soundtracks before splitting in 2000.
